There were NO excuses as their ULTIMATE was a place in Heaven with God & Jesus. This was a time when knights were under the direction of the Church. Hugh dePayne had to get permission from the Church for his initial journey to Jerusalem. He smartly did not share what was his REAL reason for going. Instead he told the French cardinal he wanted go protect the travelers to Jerusalem and the Holy Lands. Anyone of substantial means was expected to make at least one journey there in their lifetime.
